Children making Music

Children are naturally interested in music, and music is naturally good for children. That mostly summarizes why music & movement go well together for children and childhood. Music evokes movement, and children delight in and require movement for their development and growth.

Music and movement with SaPa ( Subramaniam Academy of Performing Arts ) is an integral path of the Little Red Hen & Early Years’ curriculum, and it is a delightful developmental activity as it involves the ‘whole’ child – the child’s desire for language, the body’s urge to move, the brain’s attention to patterns, the ear’s lead in initiating communication, the voice’s response to sounds, as well as the eye-hand coordination associated with playing musical instruments. Music engages the brain while stimulating neural pathways associated with such higher forms of intelligence as abstract thinking, empathy, and mathematics.

Moreover it evolves as a social activity which involves family and community participation.

SaPa (Subramaniam Academy of Performing Arts)

The Subramaniam Academy of Performing Arts is a home for great music and musicians, started by Dr. L Subramaniam and Kavita Krishnamurti Subramaniam. Its SaPa in Schools program was founded in 2014 by Bindu Subramaniam and Ambi Subramaniam, with the aim to provide every child with access to quality music education. SaPa in Schools has built an ecosystem for music education in India from the ground up, with all of its pillars – curriculum, methodology, syllabus, teacher training, and assessments – built in-house and backed by global research.

The case for Music Education

  1. Music has shown to build mental and emotional well-being.
  2. It is a gateway to developing 21st century skills like creativity, empathy and collaboration. These are projected to be the in-demand skills of the workplace, many years from now.
  3. Music helps children of all ages develop significantly stronger neural enhancement, which indicates better cognition in other academic measures

SaPa in Schools – Program Highlights

The course material is designed for learners of all age groups, and offers a lively mix of Indian and global music as well as discussions around cultural practices from around the world. The SaPa in Schools program is interdisciplinary, and teaches children to draw parallels between music and subjects like social change, physics, math, and more. – We’ve built and curated stories and activities designed to fulfill students’ Social, Emotional Learning (SEL) needs.
